Project 1: SUMMARY

FIRST:

- read chapter 3 and some examples of summaries to get an idea of what you must do

- read the article that you received

- read it again to understand it all and annotate, underline, circle, mark, highlight the text

- jot down the main ideas in the margins, and maybe write short summaries of every paragraph

- think who the intended audience of the article and of your paper is, and how it will influence your paper (vocabulary, tone, etc.)

- look at the grading criteria below to know what you're supposed to pay attention to

SECOND:

- remember what we discussed in class about summaries and what they should be:

short -- without personal opinions -- clear, organized, and to the point -- with only the main ideas -- mentioning the setting -- introducing main characters -- recognizing the positions (opinions) of the author -- keeping the structure (organization) of the article -- close to the original -- using the same language -- not complex -- citing the title of the article, its date, and its author -- clear distinction between facts and opinions -- what else?

- write a short outline of your ideas

- read the text again to make sure that your ideas match the original article

THIRD:

- write the body of your summary, then a short introduction and a short conclusion

- the total should be between 600 and 700 words (typed, double-spaced, with a title, your name, the date, the class name, correct spelling and grammar, and the word count at the end.)

- work with your classmates and your teacher to improve your drafts (make sure to include all your drafts in a folder for your teacher!)

- use the textbook (ch. 3) to get ideas and tips

- make an appointment and go to the Writing Lab (second floor, Heavilon Hall)

WHAT COUNTS?
