Print syllabus

Textbooks:

  • APA Manual, fifth edition (NOT the short edition!)
  • The Allyn & Bacon Guide to Writing, Allyn & Bacon, third edition

Resources:

  • Visit the Purdue libraries and learn how to use them
  • To write in our online journal, go to Blogger.com
  • Use the online Longman dictionary or the Merriam-Webster dictionary
  • Go visit the OWL (Online Writing Lab) to sign up for help with your papers
  • The online APA website can help you with APA style and much more
  • The CORE Tutorial can help you learn more about conducting research projects at Purdue.
  • If you feel homesick, overwhelmed, or depressed, CAPS can help you for free
  • Need a little help with motivation, relationships, depression, anxiety, relaxing? They can help you.

Things you must remember:

  • Homework and assignments can NOT be turned in late! EVER! Don't even ask for an exception.
  • If you miss class, you are expected to talk to a classmate to find out what you missed. Make sure that you have someone else’s telephone number. I will NOT spend extra time explaining to you what you have missed.
  • Please download AIM (AOL Instant Messaging) or MSN so I can contact you easily.
  • There will be NO opportunities to make up work that you have missed in class.
  • Check your e-mail messages EVERY DAY because I send important messages.
  • Please do not eat in class unless you want to share with everyone.
  • Everything you write needs to be TYPED (font: Times, 12 pt.) and DOUBLE-SPACED.
  • On everything you turn in, write your name, the project number (or assignment name), the draft number, the date, and your teacher's name.
  • When sending me your electronic drafts, please name them "LastnameDraft#.doc, (like Moussu3.doc).
  • Plagiarism means an automatic F in this class. No exception! If you are unsure about what plagiarism is, ASK your teacher or someone in the writing lab.
  • "Extra credit" can change only up to 5% of your final grade. I strongly encourage it, since individual work is always welcome, but do not count on it to get you an A when you have a C in this class. Start thinking about the grade you want early!
  • If you have ANY questions, please ask your teacher.
  • Being late not only disturbs class but is also a sign of disrespect for your classmates and your teacher. If you are late 3 times, it counts as one absence!
EVERY time you miss class, you lose points... and if you miss SEVEN times (that includes conference time), you get an automatic F in the class. NO EXCEPTION!

Grading:

  • Good grades are not given by the teacher; they are earned by the student!
  • If you are unsure of your grammar and spelling, go to the writing lab.
  • Every paper you write will be graded on a 100-point scale.
  • Here is the general breakdown of the grades (THIS IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE!):

Attendance and participation: 10%

Journals/Readings/Quizzes/Daily Homework: 10%

Project 1: Autobiography: 10%

Project 2: Explanatory report: 10%

Project 3: Summary: 10%

Project 4: Critique: 15%

Project 5: Comparison/Contrast: 15%

Project 6: Final Research Project: 20%
