Welcome
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
It is our honor and pleasure to invite you to Purdue University in
West Lafayette, Indiana for the 11th Annual Conference of the International
Association for World Englishes (IAWE).
We hope that the annual IAWE Conference is a highlight of your year,
and if it isn’t already that it becomes one, as it is for us.
It provides such a unique opportunity to meet and talk with scholars
from all corners of the globe with a shared interest in diverse aspects
of the Englishes that are developing and being used in multiple settings
and contexts.
The location for the 2005 conference is Purdue’s
beautiful West Lafayette campus in a parklike setting of trees, flowers,
grassy areas, and spectacular fountains dotted among the signature Purdue
brick buildings. The conference will take place in the Stewart Center,
a state-of-the-art conference facility, with quality hotel accommodation
and dining facilities only a few steps away.
And with its strong commitment to international education, Purdue
University provides an ideal venue for world Englishes scholars
to gather. This year the University boasts nearly 5,000 international
students and about 700 faculty and staff from 130 countries. In the
fall 2004 semester Purdue ranked second in international student enrollment
among all public United States colleges and universities.
Please consider making the IAWE Conference and Purdue University part
of your summer plans in 2005, even combining with your trip to AILA.
It would be a personal pleasure to see you there.
All best wishes,
 |

Aims
and objectives of the conference
- The International Association for World Englishes (IAWE)
aims to establish international links among those involved with any
aspect of World Englishes in research and/or teaching. The association
focuses on global issues relating to three major aspects of World Englishes:
language, literature, and pedagogy. As an organization, IAWE is committed
to the study of the forms and functions of English in diverse cultural
and sociolinguistic contexts.
- The aims of the IAWE 2005 conference relate to the inclusive and pluralistic
principles of IAWE itself, including, (1) the provision of a truly international
forum for scholars in English studies and linguistics to meet, discuss,
and share ideas; (2) the facilitation of understanding and exchange
between educators and students in this field across cultures and international
boundaries; and (3) to address and engage with a range of theoretical
and applied issues linked to the spread of English worldwide.
- The conference particularly welcomes participants from the developing
world, including societies in Africa, Asia, Central and South America,
as well as the former Soviet Union.
Conference
theme: The multiple expressions of World Englishes
Since its inception, the world Englishes perspective on the spread of
English worldwide (and such related academic enterprises as applied
linguistics, English studies, creolistics, sociolinguistics, and literatures
in English) has been multidisciplinary and pluralistic. The interests
of scholars working in this field span a wide range of interests from
linguistic theory to discourse analysis, from literary studies to corpus
linguistics, from critical linguistics to varieties-based descriptions,
and from the sociology of language to language and gender.
